Why Join The Golf Heritage Society?

For those born collectors who have realized that golf too is eminently collectible, and for all who recognize golf’s rich history and revere playing an historic venue, or just the Muni down the street, these are the souls who are the GHS.

The Golf magazine alone will delight even the most casual amongst us. But the fullest gift is feeling that you are part of something special.  The camaraderie that we pride ourselves on is there for the taking.

Our members enjoy sharing with others, especially new recruits.  The Society fosters individual growth with many members becoming recognized authorities.  All are encouraged to express themselves, whether writing for our magazine or presenting in live or virtual meetings.  Hobnobbing at conventions with world famous authors, sportscasters, professional players, architects and others is not an uncommon thrill.  You can certainly buy, sell, and trade collectibles at our National Conventions and Regional gatherings, and numerus hickory events also provide a strong connection with the past. You can research and promote your ideas or share what history you’ve discovered or items you’ve acquired.

Our biggest resource is the knowledge and generosity of our individual members.  If you wish to be active, you will visit some interesting cities and undoubtedly make many friends.  Friends that will invite you to their homes, to their private clubs, to tournaments and venues you might only have dreamed of experiencing. And contributing in a leadership role is applauded.

You don’t have to have an expansive collection, or be an authority, nor a maestro at hickory golf, but all who love the game and who have stories to tell are enthusiastically welcomed.

A Passionate Community

The GHS is at the forefront of support for individuals who collect golf memorabilia, for those who study golf’s history and especially their unearthing of lost stories and sharing them, and for those who enjoy playing golf with the implements reminiscent of their grandparents, parents or during their younger days.

All are welcomed with sincere cordiality.

Member's Only Events

The Societies National Convention is held every fall in varied US locations with all members encouraged to participate in its numerous Educational Sessions, the Golf Tournament (which has multiple divisions including hickory, classic club, scrambles, and modern divisions), “Room Trading” leading up to the world’s largest golf collectibles Trade Show, and the Gala Dinner Banquet featuring a notable speaker, recognition of member honorees and loads of fun.  The convention is always a good excuse for taking a short vacation. A recent convention in the Pittsburg, PA area made for an especially wonderful day playing golf at Arnie’s famed Latrobe CC

A Sister Event is held every late winter in Dublin, Ohio featuring a similar trade show with great opportunities to acquire or sell collectibles and reminisce.

Regional Events. The GHS is divided into 10 geographic Regions (including international) with regional gatherings and frequent visits to renowned sites, touring clubhouse museums or playing golf.  Historic Merion GC has hosted GHS members every spring to its archives and a wonderful luncheon.  Other trips to Oakmont CC and Columbia CC have added to the many gatherings around the country throughout the year with trading opportunities and friendly hickory golf tournaments.

GHS Member Directory

The greatest resource of the Society is its individual members. To facilitate the development of connections between members, the Member Directory is produced in both hard copy and digital forms.  All members have a private “profile page” but can decide to share parts of that information with the membership at large, and in particular share their specified individual collecting or historical interests.  That way, the online directory can be searched to immediately display all those who have a common interest.  And to show members who might reside in nearby towns.

GHS Speaker's Bureau & Newswire

The Golf magazine is anxiously awaited every three months, and because a regional meeting might be outside of your travel plans, every month the membership receives the Society Newswire, which details recent and upcoming activities and shares historic and collectibles content.

In addition, they receive other announcements including notices for the GHS Speakers Bureau which includes the date and invitation link for members to participate in live zooms.  Those especially valuable examples have been labeled “Grand Zooms” and all are archived for viewing on the Members Only pages.

On the left, Alastair Johnson, book collector and historian extraordinaire, and IMG executive and originator of the PNC Golf Championship, treats fellow GHS members to insights of golf history and secrets of the PGA Tour by Zoom.

Member Benefits

Partnerships in Growing The Game

Modern initiatives find GHS members seeking greater partnerships with fraternal societies, the USGA, Museums, and an outreach to junior golfers, such as The First Tee program, that they might be introduced to the wonderful history of the game, a greater presence through social media, and a revitalized overall approach to its mission of serving the history of the game.

Our support of worthy golf initiatives also includes aiding restorations of Foxburg CC and Clearview GC.  GHS presence at industry gatherings includes the PGA Merchandise Show, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America conference and trade show, the African American Golf Expo & Forum.
